Band Of Brothers is a fantastic book written by the extremerly talented Steven E. Ambrose. The book takes you into the heart of world war two and into the lives of a crack rifle company in the US army. The young men the book follows are in E company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne.
The journey starts in Normandy and ends with the succesful invasion of Germany and the capture of the infamous 'eagles nest' the home of the ruthless Adolf Hitler. Many of Hitlers important Nazi party officials had houses in the magnificant Alpine town of Berchesgarden where the Eagles nest lay.
Band of Brothers is incredibly accurate due to the fact that the book was produced after a series of interviews with the soldiers of Easy companys themselves. Mnay of these soldiers are alive to this day.
It all starts in Taccoa in the summer of 1942 by which time the europeans had been at war for three years. At Toccoa the young men are trained to go to war. As the regiment is a parachute one they are all taught from scratch how to successfully deploy oneself from a moving C-47 airoplane. Many began to question why on earth theyhad signed up in the first place as a cold captain called Sobel pushed the men to the limits. Indeed not all of them made the cut. Those that did not were simply kicked out.
This time of hardship really galvernised the new recruits, they quickly became close friends. By the end of the war they were like brothers hence the saying Band of Brothers!
The words Band of Brothers were first said in the play Henry V by William Shakespeare. In the play the king of England Henry V delivers a speech to his men before the battle of Agincourt. He calls his men a Band of Brothers.
Band of Brothers was made into a ten part television series by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. The events in the series are obviously taken from the book itself by Ambrose. The Characters portrayed in the series are real life heroes who fought in the 2nd world war.
The televisions series available on DVD was a huge success and is incredibly incredibly well edited. One of the key characters within the series and consequently the book is a chap called Richard Winters who starts off as a Liuetenant and by the end of the war is a major. These distinguishments are impressive but not as impressive as the manner in the way he earnt them. He truly was the one of the Band of Brothers.
