Factory worker – Dead End Job or An Exciting Career Option?

What is involved in being a factory worker? A Factory worker may be many things, they may be an assembly line worker or a stores assistant.

A factory worker may be a test engineer or a quality manager. These are just a few of the many types of people you will find working in factories across the country.

Factories often get a bad press today, we associate them with images of tall chimneys belching thick black smoke into the atmosphere, a picture of a bygone age of an industrial past. Perhaps it is for this reason that many people today seem ashamed to admit to being a factory worker.

I hope what follows may help to challenge these assumptions and maybe help you to consider whether your next career move might introduce you to factory life.

I have been working in factories for nearly ten years, during that time I have had a number of different roles, an assembly worker, a maintenance engineer, a programmer of integrated circuits, a programmer of CAD/CAM machinery, and even as a web designer. In this article I am going to introduce you to three of the most key roles to be found in most factories and explain a little of what is involved in each of them, and why you might like to consider them as a career option.

Assembly Worker

An assembly worker is the most numerous of all factory workers. It is the role of an assembly worker to do the actual assembly of whatever the factory is producing.

There are still some factories where the job of an assembly worker is dull, boring, and repetitive but these factories are becoming less, and less common. These days a factory worker will usually enjoy a varied and interesting working day, employers will try to vary the assigned tasks so that a factory worker is not left doing the same job for too long a period.

The actual jobs that an assembly worker will be asked to perform will vary from factory to factory, sometimes they will be part of a production line, and sometimes they will be left to complete individual jobs that will be shipped to different customers.

Test Engineer

For a factory worker the role of test engineer will usually involve testing of the products that are produced in the factory.

Some factories will test every individual item that is produced, while others will test only a sample from each batch of products.

A test engineer may also be responsible for dealing with any products that are returned to the factory for repair.

Stores assistant

A factory worker stores assistant has a vital role in the day-to-day life of the factory. They are responsible for the smooth flow of raw materials coming into the building, and for packaging and shipping the finished product on its way to the factories customers.

Other reasons you may want to consider becoming a factory worker.

Factories often have a more relaxed atmosphere than you will find in an office environment. Factories usually produce a finished product and this is more emotionally satisfying than working in an office and only producing paperwork.

We could spend many more pages looking at other job roles from the factory setting but we will end now before we become too repetitious. I trust this article may have gone some way towards helping you consider a career as a factory worker.
