Sense and Sensibility .. A novel by Jane Austen .
This was Jane Austens first full length novel .
The first draft was written when she was about 19years old under the title , 'Elinor and Marianne' .
It was finally published some 16yrs later in 1811 , under the pseudonym of ' A Lady ' .
It has remained a highly rated novel ever since, entertaining generations of readers.
Sense and Sensibility displays Austen's subtle irony and wit at its best, with many outstanding comic passages. As in many of Austens novels , she highlights the social attitudes and hypocrisy of her times .
The story revolves around the trials and tribulations of the Dashwood family .In particular the contrast in natures of two of the Dashwood sisters, Elinor's sense and Marianne's emotionalism or sensibility .
Austens usual ' happy ending ' neatly join the themes of sense and sensibility through having the sensible sister marry her true love after long, romantic obstacles, and the emotional sister finding happiness with a man she did not initially love, but who was an eminently sensible choice of a husband.
